Weekly Summary #4

This week in DS106 wasn’t too bad, the weeks just seem to be flying by faster and faster as time goes on. The daily creates for this week were cool, I would say that the only difficult thing we had to do was the reflections. Just because of the fact that they were so long and I tend to fade out if something isn’t entertaining, so I kind of had to force myself to comprehend what they were talking about. Looking at other people blogs at first I was thinking like man I am way behind, because theirs looked so good but then I fixed my page up and I am getting better at working word press and using different plugins to get things done.

Along with looking at other classmate’s blogs, I checked out their posts and daily creates. I didn’t know that I would see so many different viewpoints of reflections. I see that the way that I understood something, someone else can see it a whole different way. I don’t think that some know that they have to approve their comments, because I left a few comments on post’s and went back to them and they were not there yet.

What I learned this week:

  • I learned that there are even more ways of storytelling not just categories like broadcasting, but the actual way HOW they tell the story, (sounds, music,).

What gave you trouble? What did you enjoy most?

  • The only thing that I had trouble with this week was listening to the long videos, just because I have a hard time comprehending things after I lose interest.
  • What I enjoyed the most was easily the audio assignments. I am usually really shy but doing those they were pretty fun to make.

What would you do differently? What questions to you have?

  • What I would do differently is take notes while listening to the videos so that I make sure I can touch on every point at the end.
  • Don’t have any questions this week because everything was pretty self-explanatory.

Listening to Stories

The podcasts begin with Ira Glass talking to different students of Columbia University and seeing how they got accepted to the school. Some of the students said that it was because of what their application was based on or a sport they played (gymnastics). Other students said it was because of their GPA or high SAT scores. While he was introducing the story you could hear the background music playing, and they let the guy tell the story himself. But also while the story is being told you can hear random sound effects that don’t really go along with the way they are speaking. The voices change between a man and woman giving you better perspective so you can hear it but also get a visual of it in your head.

Sound Effect Story

I chose to do my sound effect story of my morning routine after I wake up! It was pretty funny while making this, sense I couldn’t do any vocal sounds.

Video Reflections

Ira Glass talks about two main points in Part 1 of the podcast which where he talks about “the anecdote” and then there is the second main point which is “moment of reflection”. Podcast usually have one or the other, rarely will anyone have both. He talks about how broadcasting is different from regular story telling there isn’t just a certain routine to follow because that would be boring.  While telling the story the listener should be able to have a lot of questions while the story is going on. It should make them curious but also be understanding of the story at the same time.

In part two, Ira talks about finding a story, and how important it is to fine tune it and not go base it on whether or not it is correct. But just being able to find something to talk about without losing listeners interest.

Jad Abumrad’s “How Radio Creates Empathy”.

He explains how he could be telling a story while on the radio, just a simple story but he paints pictures in the listeners heads. He used the words “Co-authorship” and “Co-imagining” saying how the person who hears him speak is also technically an author because they take it the way they want and see in/imagine it in their own heads and in a way rewrite the story in their minds.

Weekly Summary #3

This week in DS106 flew by rather fast! I think it is cool how it doesn’t even feel like it’s a class, more like a big community that learns more and more about each other every day. I would say that it is going pretty well so far but definitely not perfect. Trying to learn all the tricks and trades of my blog is harder than I thought it would be. Tweaking everything to get it just right takes a long time for me for some odd reason. The fact that we get to put our own spin on most of the assignments has to be the best part. Also looking at others to see how they went about explaining their meaning of storytelling, I realize that everyone has their own definition for it.

How well do I feel I completed the requirements of the week’s assignments?

  • I feel that I completed them correctly and really enjoyed adding my personal thoughts to them, it really makes the assignments more fun to do.

What gave you trouble? What did you enjoy most? What did you learn?

  • What gave me the most trouble this week was only trying to put the 5 Photos for my story on my page. The editor on the dashboard was really hard and annoying, it isn’t like Microsoft word where you can move the pictures around in a perfect spot where you want them. It was by far the most frustrating thing I have done so far. I wish it was more user friendly than it is.
  • What I enjoyed the most was getting to put my own spin on the assignments.
  • I learned a lot about Storytelling as a whole and how it combines to Digital Storytelling. While also learning about the other students definitions of storytelling and what it means to them in their lives.

What would you do differently? What questions to you have?

  • The only thing I would differently is try to add my photos on a different way because the editor on the dashboard is really difficult when you are adding media, well in my experience. I also have one question, how do I just set my main page to being my “About me” page then having to click the categories to go to the other content I have added?
